THE problem u face is quite common to teachers who go for teaching heterogeneous sections for teaching those students is sometimes difficult . AS WE HAVE TO MONITOR THEM IN EVERY RESPECT.Please observe them for how they receive u and act according to it as Lisa has already said . u need to counsel them and ask them their problems time and then act

There are 4 core skills - listening, reading, writing and speaking Some students are more comfortable with one skills than the other and it is based on their performance level.

students who are comfortable with their reading ability will find reading exercises more enjoyable than the rest. therefore they will look interested when it comes to learning that skill.

some students prefer quiet learning while some like active, communication-based learning approach.

It is not dofficult to determine which one is your student's preferred style. You can try out different approaches and see which one is most comfortable to them. Asking them might help too.

Practice multiple learning styles with them. Use every method you can think of, then determine which works best for each student. Asking the student is silly because nobody really knows until they try each technique.

*edit* Lisa, there are far more than 4 learning styles. Visual, Auditory, Hands on/Project based, Rote skills and numerous others can be added to your list. When trying to find the best skills for each learner to use, it's important not to think of the number of ways tried but to continue searching until the BEST method for THAT STUDENT has been found no matter how many methods have been tried.

Use one of the many learning style quizzes before you start teaching your students to see which methods will work best for them.

Be sure to inform your students of their learning style so that they can be better prepared for private lessons in the future.
